Britain’s Got Talent: “Brilliant” Viral Marketing

susan_boyle_britains_got_talent

“If you haven’t heard of Susan Boyle, it’s YOUR FAULT!”

Superior Viral Marketing

After a shocking performance on Britain’s Got Talent, Susan Boyle, a 47-year-old Scottish woman, broke all kinds of YouTube and online video records. According to ViralVideoChart, her video has over 143,389,133 views across all video networks. That’s a goal to be sought after. But how did they do it?

For one, they had the viral ’emotional factor’ with her emotionally affecting TV performance of I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables. (<- For those of you haven’t seen it!) Dubbed the “Singing Virgin” (Crikey.com), the mix of her outdated fashion sense and a self-declared un-kissed church singer, you can only wonder about her YouTube life that is now heading toward 100 million views (the record is 120 million), including 20 million within the first 24 hours of its posting. That’s a record right there!

Susan Boyle has her own Wikipedia Page: Susan Boyle, and a Susan Boyle Fan-Site. Oh, did I mention she was on Twitter as well? Win or lose, it doesn’t matter because she is set.

In The Press

Many British newspapers carried articles on Boyle’s performance and subsequent Internet coverage. US & International news outlets also carried stories on her, including among others, The Times of India, Germany’s Der Spiegel, China’s Xinhua News Agency, Brazil’s Zero Hora, Israel’s Ynet, and the Arabic-language Al Arabiya.

On TV

Within the week following her performance on Britain’s Got Talent, Boyle was a guest on STV’s The Five Thirty Show. She was interviewed via satellite on CBS’s Early Show, ABC’s Good Morning America, NBC’s Today, and The Oprah Winfrey Show, and via a telephone interview on FOX’s America’s Newsroom. Boyle also appeared via satellite on CNN’s Larry King Live.

Still Going Strong…

Just to gain a sense of  how current all of this is, if you check out YouTube’s most popular videos of the week and the month, you’ll notice that most of the videos are from Britains Got Talent,  (including one of my favorites,  Mr. Methane).

Conclusion

Britain’s Got Talent left BIG SHOES TO FILL for America’s Got Talent (the US version). Either they’ll ride the wave of press, or fail horribly. In a sense, the real Talent show is “Which Talent show will prevail as #1 Marketing?” Ultimately you, the reader, will be the one to decide.

Marketers Monetize Passover: Twitter, YouTube and More…

With 100’s of newspaper articles, social networking, viral networking, youtube videos, widgets and more…Passover takes the cake (well, in this case, unleavened cake) this April. Here’s a collection of stats that give a good sense as to just how popular this holiday really is…

Google Keyword Statistics

Believe it or not, I took the time to check in on the Google Keyword stats for “Passover” and was pretty shocked. I did similar research for Keyword Statistics For The Jewish Holiday of Purim.

Passover Google Keyword Stats

For Those of  You Who Don’t Know…

Of all the Jewish holidays, according to JewFaq.org, “[Passover] is the one most commonly observed, even by otherwise non-observant Jews. According to the 1990 National Jewish Population Survey (NJPS), more than 80% of Jews have attended a Pesach seder”. For those of you who don’t know, Passover, “is a Jewish and Samaritan holy day and festival commemorating God sparing the Hebrews when he killed the first born of Egypt, and is the seven day Feast of the Unleavened Bread (it lasts eight days in the diaspora) commemorating the Exodus from Egypt and the liberation of the Israelites from slavery”. (Wikipedia)

Popularity

So now you’re wondering, “What’s out there? Who’s capitilizing on Passover Popularity?” Let’s take a look. People are Twittering about Passover NON-STOP. Every minute, the list updates. Once of my favorite finds is the search widget that helps people find a local passover meal (ie: Passover Seder). Check out Find A Seder Near You on Chabad.org. But that’s nothing in comparison to the amount of news articles covering Passover. I ran a search on Google News and noticed that almost every major newspaper in the country had an article on Passover:

If that’s not enough, Viral Videos on YouTube have claimed millions of hits. 10 Things I hate about Commandments, spoofing a popular movie (can you guess which one?) has claimed nearly 2.5 million views. Nearing a million and one of my recent favorites is “20 Things To Do With Matzah”. Featuring the talented voice of Michelle Citrin, they have also put together a landing page full of affiliate ads that have no doubt been generating significant revenue. Check it out at Matzahsong.com. To add to the list, controversial Jib-Jab has also put together a list of e-cards and viral videos to monetize the Passover season.

So at the end of the day, it’s amazing to see how much attention Passover accrues being that it takes place in 1 month a year. Can’t wait to see the same level of coverage for Easter.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Durex Condoms Like You’ve Never Seen Them Before!

As part of this blogs timely Friday Tradition, I usually post one “Viral Video of The Week“, but this video tops the one I posted earlier today (Funniest Twitter Satire…EVER!). Special thanks to my friends at Thanks to my friends at ViralVideoChart and CONDOMunity.

Durex – Get It On!

Spreading faster than STD’s, Durex recently released a clever (and hilarious) viral ad called Get it On, a video suggesting that you use condoms in all kind of situations. “Perhaps it would be best to call this an anti-viral.” (Condomunity) With well over 6 million views across all video networks, this video takes the #1 spot for viral video of the week. Obama Town Hall: Response to 3.5 million votes on Marijuana

“The answer is no, I don’t think that [is] a good strategy.”

Following up on my previous article Obama Town Hall: What’s Really On People’s Minds?…MARIJUANA, President Barack Obama pledged to open up the White House to the American people...well, sort of!

Of the 3.5 million people that voted, “There was one question that was voted on that ranked fairly high and that was whether legalizing marijuana would improve the economy and job creation, and I don’t know what this says about the online audience,” he laughed.

Some people didn’t find this funny? The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) prepared their own heated response titled  “What Is So Funny About Taxing And Regulating Marijuana?” The audience didn’t have to laugh, and NORML shared their 2 cents on the matter. Their article ends on a witty note: “Sorry Obama, this time the joke’s on you.

It seems major publishes have picked up on this topic as well:

  1. Huffington Post: Obama Takes Pot Legalization Question During Townhall (VIDEO).
  2. Christian Science Monitor: For Obama, an online do-over of Tuesday’s press conference
  3. Fast Company: The Banality of Obama’s “Cutting-Edge” Web Event
  4. The Associated Press: AP Top News at 3:29 p.m. EDT
  5. US-News: Obama: Marijuana Legalization Not Good For The Economy

Overall I think this online Town Hall approach to getting the people involved is pure genius. This is a small example of how it is a bit controversial, but now adays, what isn’t? I have a feeling this is an issue that won’t go away and I predict that NORML and marijuana supporters will be a bit more prepared for the next Town Hall. I imagine President Obama will have something more to say as well.
