Online Agency’s “X-Rated” Ad Campaigns

I  was reading Search Marketing Standard magazine last night, the winter 08/09 issue, and happened to notice 2 ad campagins that used sexual inuendo/images to push their product. I’m 100% serious! On page 53, Online Marketing Agency StickyEyes.com (with a name like that, you have to be careful!) posted a rather funny ad. Stickyeyes is one of the UK’s leading internet marketing agencies and I consider this a rather “bold approach”. The headline read “PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT“. Above the headline they showed a magnifying glass hovering over a pack of sperm and one of them had a Jet-Pack strapped to it! If you go to StickyEyes home page, you’ll see a similar image (as shown below) with the headline “GIVE YOURSELF AN UNFAIR ADVANTAGE“:

I can understand how and why they would call themselves StickyEyes, but to then go ahead with a sperm related ad-campaign? I guess the UK see’s things a little differently.

You would think that SMS would stop there…WRONG! It gets better! On the back-cover, Texas based SEO Agency, Zunch, takes the cake. Picture this: An older couple, maybe in their 50’s, sitting side by side. The wife leans on her husband affectionately and the caption below them reads, “It was Connie’s idea for us to zunch. I’m glad we did. Bigger really is better.” Is this an ad for male enhancement? You’d think Enzite would be a client of theirs!

I was able to find to find an original ad-copy on the web. Guess where I found out? On the website of David Wilkie, Co-founder and EVP of creative for Zunch from 1999-2005. He’s now a freelance creative designer and overall talent artist (GreenHammock.com) and I sent him an e-mail saying “Thank you!” He left the original document floating on the web for me to find (click here to see it):

At the end of the day, these ads work! Whether or not they are more effective with their X-Rated twist is another question…which I don’t know the answer to. I leave it to you for feedback and I leave it to myself to find out.

***I found another one posted by Cheezehead.com: Careerbuilder’s ‘dirty skanks’ ad campaign, where CareerBuilder put an ad on CollegeHumor.com that read: After you’re done watching dirty skanks, find a better job.
